Sippin’ on Small Business Saturday

Black Friday is often considered the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season, and for many small business owners, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is when their big sales occur. Small Business Saturday has become increasingly popular in recent years, and local businesses are reaping the rewards. This year Small Business Saturday falls on Saturday, Nov. 24, and Scooter’s Coffee’s® franchisees are getting ready!

What is Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday where consumers are encouraged to support local small businesses. Originally created by American Express in 2009 as a PR and marketing campaign, it has since blossomed into a much larger movement. In 2011, Congress made the day official and declared the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year to officially be Small Business Saturday. Now every year, excited holiday shoppers are eager to purchase gifts locally and bring awareness (and income) to small businesses. An estimated 108 million consumers participated in Small Business Saturday in 2017. This generated almost $12 million in reported sales.

Why is Supporting Local Businesses Important?

Supporting local businesses can help boost the local economy. Consumers can help their community and invest in their neighbors by shopping locally. With their small businesses, franchisees have a chance to know the people buying the product and can develop a relationship with them. This results not only in more personalized customer service but also puts money back into the community. A Chicago study found that shopping locally has a huge impact on the community. On average, 48 percent of revenue from local purchases are recirculated in the community.
