Veterans Explore Franchising

opportunities for veterans

Military members pour their heart and soul into protecting our country day in and day out. Unfortunately, once our service members come home they often have a hard time adjusting to their new normal. However, there are opportunities for veterans to find a fulfilling second-act career that utilizes the skills they mastered through their experience in the military.

Transitioning to Civilian Life

It’s an unfortunate trend, but often military service members have a difficult time adjusting back to every day civilian life.  Veterans may be faced with hardships such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), social anxiety or unemployment.

According to Prudential:

  • Veterans name finding a job as their greatest challenge during their transition back to civilian life
  • One in five veterans surveyed are unemployed and actively seeking employment
  • The majority of veterans feel their military service is respected, but three in five veterans express concern about cultural barriers in the workplace

Not all jobs are accommodating for veterans; often, service members are faced with bosses and coworkers who don’t understand the gravity of their experiences. Finding employment is the first challenge; securing a job you enjoy can seem almost impossible, but there are options.

Is Business Ownership a Viable Option for Veterans?

Business ownership, particularly franchise ownership, can be a tremendous career opportunity for veterans. Through franchise investments, owners are able to maintain the independence of a small business owner while still benefiting from the support of a corporate team. Veterans can utilize their leadership skills to effectively direct their team, but still have support with tasks such as site selection, planning, training, operations and marketing.

There are several veteran-friendly franchises, such as Scooter’s Coffee®, which recognize the value of our nation’s veterans. Working with a reputable company provides instant brand recognition, established operational systems and a built-in network. Independent business owners are forced to start from scratch, while franchisees have a leg up on success right from day one.

How Can Veterans Find the Right Opportunity?

Despite 45 percent of veterans stating they have used 10 or more resources in their job hunt, the unemployment rate still remains at a staggering 33 percent. The most commonly used job-search resources are online, newspapers and online job boards. For veterans interested in franchising, the leading resource is Vetfran.com.

VetFran is a strategic initiative of the International Franchise Association (IFA). Founded in 1991, VetFran’s mission is to provide opportunities in franchising for veterans and their spouses. Through the work of partners like Scooter’s Coffee, VetFran strives to be the go-to resource for veterans and their spouses who are looking to enter the franchising industry.

Scooter’s Coffee welcomes veterans who are interested in becoming part of the family, recognizing that military men and women are ideal candidates for franchisees. Veterans tend to be driven, ambitious, self-disciplined and incredibly hardworking – all traits that serve a franchise owner well. As a salute to service members, Scooter’s Coffee offers veterans a $20,000 credit towards the purchase of products during the veteran’s first year of operation.  With Veterans Day coming up on November 11, Scooter’s Coffee wants to reaffirm the respect we have for the men and women who serve — and have served — our country.
